One of the most important elements of a child's birthday party is the cake. Many children ask for the colorful and elaborate cakes they see in grocery stores and bakeries, but these designer cakes can be very expensive. You can try many fun and exciting cake ideas at home to save some money and thrill your child on his birthday. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Simple Cakes Made Fun

    • You don't have to go too elaborate to make a fun cake for your child's birthday. Start by making a simple round or sheet cake, either from scratch or with a cake mix. You can make this simple cake special by adding unique and creative decorations. Add a few polka dots or lines to create a whimsical pattern. Buy some special candles, toys or candies featuring your child's favorite character and arrange them on the cake. Cut shapes out of fruit roll-ups and place them on the cake over top of some basic frosting. If you keep the design simple you do not need any special cake decorating skills or equipment to give your cake some pizazz.

    Shaped Cakes

    • If you want to make your cake slightly more elaborate, make your birthday cake in a special shape and frost it accordingly. Novelty cake pans are available in many specialty baking and craft stores and with these pans you can simply bake your cake into the shape of your choice. Alternatively, you can bake a sheet cake, draw a shape onto the baked cake with icing and carefully cut around your icing outline. There are many shape ideas that kids will love and you can make your cake in the shape of an animal, car, cartoon character, sports jersey, clown, princess or whatever else your child desires.

    Unconventional Cakes

    • If you really want some wow factor, do away with the standard cake structure and make a less conventionally shaped cake. One idea favored by little girls is making a cake in the shape of a ball gown and sticking a Barbie doll in the middle so the cake looks like her dress. If your child does not particularly like cake, make him a cake out of rice cereal treats. You can also use several cakes to build three-dimensional structures like castles.

    Cupcakes

    • Like larger cakes, cupcakes can be frosted in a number of ways to reflect your child's interests and preferences. Cupcakes can be decorated individually or arranged together to create a larger design. Use cupcakes to spell out your child's name and a happy birthday wish or arrange them in a tic-tac-toe pattern. You can also decorate the cupcakes with sparkles and put sticks into the sides so that they look like fairy wands.
