State of Missouri Business Licenses
No business in Missouri is allowed to operate unless it has met the relevant registration requirements for its specific structure. A Missouri business may also be subject to both vehicle and driver licensing. There are also many types of businesses that must register for occupational licenses.
-
Registration
-
A new business that is set up as a sole proprietorship or partnership must normally register its name with the Missouri Secretary of State's office. This is known as a fictitious name. The only exception to this rule is where the business name contains both the last name and either the first name or a recognizable form of the first name (such as "Bob" for "Robert") of the owner or owners of the business.
If a business is set up as a corporation, the articles of corporation must be registered with the Secretary of State's office. If a business is set up as a limited partnership, the owners must file a certificate of limited partnership with the Corporations Division.
Vehicle licensing
-
Any motor vehicle that is used for carrying freight or merchandise, or designed to carry more than eight passengers in a commercial setting (such as for a coach company), must be registered and licensed as a commercial vehicle. The fees depend on whether or not the vehicle qualifies as a local commercial vehicle, meaning it is confined to a 25-mile area.
-
Driver Licensing
-
Any driver who works in Missouri transporting either people or property must carry a special license. This will be a Class A, B, C or E license, depending on the class of vehicle used.
Occupational License
-
In more than 100 occupations and types of business, practitioners and/or operators must be licensed in Missouri. While many of these licenses cover health and safety issues, there are also a range of businesses requiring a professional registration. Among these professions are several that might not seem obvious candidates for registration, such as athlete's agent, barber, martial arts trainer and tattoo artist.
