Homemade Spa Treatments for Kids

Homemade Spa Treatments for Kids thumbnail
Homemade facials are a fun, healthy way to pamper your kids.

Either as a creative party idea or a simple rainy day activity, a day at the spa can help your kids feel pampered and healthy. But you don't need to spend a lot of money to enjoy the luxury of a high-end spa. You can make many of the best treatments at home, using ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Facial Scrubs

    • Facial scrubs gently exfoliate and moisturize delicate skin, leaving your face feeling soft and clean. Try a homemade exfoliating mask by combining ingredients like brown sugar, oatmeal and olive oil into a thick paste. Smooth it on in circular motions and let it dry for 15 minutes. Rinse and follow up with a moisturizing treatment made with mashed fruits like grapes, bananas and avocados. Your kids will love the edible goop, and you'll love the softening vitamins and minerals.

    Bath Salts

    • Bath salts can help relax tense muscles and minds. For a colorful kid-friendly version, combine a carton of Epsom salt with a packet of your favorite flavored drink mix and a few drops of essential oil in any scent you like. Mix it until the color evens out, and store it in an air-tight container. When you're ready to use it, run a hot bath and let 1 to 3 tbsp. of the salt dissolve in the water before you get in the tub. If you're throwing a spa-themed party, let the kids experiment with different colors and layer them in pretty bottles for a spa-themed party favor.

    Lip Balm

    • Lip balm softens and moisturizes your lips while adding an important layer of protection in harsh weather. To make your own balm at home, melt unflavored vegetable shortening and add a packet of your kid's favorite drink mix. Let the powder dissolve, divide the mixture into small, airtight containers and refrigerate them overnight to harden the balm. Let your children experiment with different flavors by adding a few tablespoons of flavored soda, cocoa powder or crushed hard candies. Add a teaspoon of sunblock for lip balm that helps protect against the sun's UV rays.

    Pedicures

    • A moisturizing maintenance treatment, pedicures improve the health and appearance of feet. They often include a hot soak to soften the skin, a gentle scrape to remove dead skin cells, and colorful toenail treatments. You can create your own home pedicure soaks with Epsom salt water mixed with other beneficial ingredients, like moisturizing olive oil or invigorating rosemary. Use cornmeal or coffee grounds to exfoliate, and finish by treating your kids to their favorite shades of nail polish.
