Summer school is a great way to get a leg start on college courses

Summer schools, also known as summer universities, are learning programs sponsored by various educational institutions during summer. These schools are set up during the summer vacations so that students are able to gather additional knowledge on their subjects of interest. Though summer is meant for holidays and a break from studies, summer schools hold potential opportunity for students interested in additional studies, especially as they can be useful in getting started with college credits.

  1. Media Studies at Boston University Academy of Media production

    • Summer sessions on media studies are offered at the Boston University Academy of Media. This course aims at unleashing the innovative ideas in young students about the democratic social system. The duration of the program is four weeks and the number of participants in each summer session is 60. High school students can get hands-on experience in media production by enrolling in this course. They are trained in a friendly and amiable environment. Students can write, direct or produce commercials, short films, news reports, webcasts and radio programs on their own. Various activities are arranged for the participants during evenings and weekends. It is a residential program and the age limit is 14 to 17 years old.

    Northwestern University's National High School Institute- Media And Journalism

    • A college preparation and summer enrichment program is offered at the Northwestern University's National High School Institute in Evanston, Illinois. This is the oldest university-based program designed for high school students. There are six different divisions, each offering extensive education on various aspects of media studies. Eminent people from the academic community of Northwestern University participate in the summer school program as faculty. Courses like journalism, film and video production as well as championship debates are integral parts of the program. The program generally commences in the month of July and ends in August. It is a coeducational program and average number of participants is 700.

    University Of Miami

    • The University of Miami offers extensive summer media programs for the students who have completed their junior year in high school. Programs associated with media studies include film making, broadcast journalism and art, design Images. It is a college-credit program aiming at academic enrichment of the participants. The three-week-long program starts in June and ends in July. Exceptional faculty and pioneering researches are two key advantages of the program. Lectures, field trips and lab work sessions are arranged to help students get complete exposure to the subject. Short excursions to nearby tourist spots are arranged for the participants during their stay at the summer session.

    Pre-College Summer Institute, The University of the Arts

    • The summer course conducted at The Pre-College Summer Institute of The University of the Arts in Philadelphia aims at revealing the creative abilities of the participants. The program features extensive training in media, communications and performing and visual arts. Students between the ages of 16 and19 can apply for the program. The courses commence in July and their duration is four weeks.
