Subscribing to a gardening catalog or Internet site allows horticulturists to see a wide variety of flower bulbs or seeds in a short amount of time. Many of these companies date back to the 19th century, such as Park Seed Company and Van Bourgondien. Not only do many of these companies sell seeds or flower bulbs, but they also offer information on horticulture seminars and hosts annual flower events. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Park Seed Company

    • Founded in 1868, the Park Seed Company is one of the oldest mail-order gardening companies in the United Sates, according to the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism. The company's early days were in Pennsylvania, but Park Seed made the move to Greenwood, South Carolina, in 1924. Customers obtain Park Seed bulbs, seeds and flowers via catalogs and the Internet. This company hosts the annual Park Seed Flower Day every June in Greenwood; this festival features more than 1,500 varieties of flowers and offers gardening seminars from nationally renowned horticulturists.

    Van Bourgondien

    • The roots of the Van Bourgondien bulb company trace back to the Netherlands in the early 19th century. This company began a flowering catalog service in Europe during the 1880s and set up operations in the United States in the early 20th century. Bulbous plants from Van Bourgondien include amaryllis, daffodils and day lilies. The Van Bourgondien company offers catalogs for each of the four seasons. According to St. Joseph College, one of the company's vice presidents, Debbie Van Bourgondien, offers horticulture seminars.

    John Scheepers

    • The history of John Scheepers, a Ohio-based Dutch flower bulb company, dates back to the early 20th century when the company's founder, John Scheepers, began a flower catalog business. The company's catalog includes more than 700 varieties of bulb plants, including lilies, tulips and hyacinths. The company has been featured in the "Minneapolis Star-Tribune" as one of the premier catalog sources for tulips. John Scheepers usually sells small batches of flowers for discounted prices; the company's sister company is Van Engelen, a wholesale flower company.

    Genesis Seeds

    • The Genesis Seeds company is an Israeli-based seed company and it specializes in flower, vegetable and herb seeds. The company also conducts research and experiments with hybridized seeds. Some of the company's research projects include developing seeds for melons and watermelons, cucumber breeding and cultivating carrot and artichoke seeds. This company is on the Organic Seed Alliance's list of seed companies that sell organic seeds. Genesis herb seeds include hibiscus, thyme, oregano, catnip and basil. This State of Israel's Ministry of Agriculture has certified the Genesis Seeds company.
