Birthday Party Ideas for Grandparents

Birthday Party Ideas for Grandparents thumbnail
Give your grandparents a party to remember.

Celebrating a grandparent's birthday can be a celebration for the whole family. It brings everyone together -- which does not happen so often nowadays -- and creates a family atmosphere for all. However, just like everyone else, your grandparents have their own tastes and lifestyles, so consider their hobbies or interests while planning. Also, bear the health of your grandparents in mind when organizing the party. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Themed Party

    • Your grandparents may be into dancing, gardening, golf or a number of other activities, especially if they are retired. Whatever their interest, theme the party to reflect this. For instance, a dance-themed party could have videos playing on the walls of Fred and Ginger. If funds permit, hire a band to play live music at the party. A golf-themed party, on the other hand, could incorporate a golf club-shaped cake with the birthday age iced on top of it.

    Nostalgia

    • Our favorite memories tend to be from our youth. If your grandparents were around in the '60s, ask guests to dress in '60s-style clothing and play oldies music at the birthday party. Add a little psychedelic lighting and a disco ball to recreate the era and bring back some happy memories for your grandparents.

    Job Related

    • If your grandparent is newly retired, theme a party around her old job to stir up some nostalgia. Have white boards around the room with slogans on them if she was a teacher, or get everyone to wear white coats or police uniforms if your grandpa was a doctor or police officer, respectively. Invite their ex-colleagues if they still keep in touch. Have the cake styled to reflect the theme as well.

    Holiday Party

    • Your grandparents may not be able to afford a vacation, or may be too weak to travel. If that's the case, bring the holiday to them for their birthday party. Ask everyone to dress up in tropical clothes, such as shorts and Hawaiian shirts. Play fun, vacation-inspired music, and project videos on the wall of the sea and beach. Serve tropical cocktails and top it all off with a birthday cake in the shape of a holiday beach hut or the sun.
