Bridal Bouquet Flower Ideas
Using flowers and plants in weddings is an ancient practice, thought to have helped ward off evil and offer fertility. Flower bridal bouquets are a more recent tradition from Victorian times when the flowers used carried hidden meanings. Bridal bouquets are a beautiful way to bring tradition to a wedding. While any flower can make a bouquet, there are certain species of flower used repeatedly for weddings.
-
Roses
-
Rose bouquets have long been the standard in weddings. They are elegant, come in a range of colors and have an alluring scent. Consider a bouquet of white roses and blue belles or lisianthius flowers for that touch of something blue. White tea roses make a small bouquet beautiful, while red roses add striking color and passion to the classic ceremony.
Commercially grown roses are available any time of year, but come into season in middle to late summer and are then cheaper to obtain.
Tulips
-
The runner-up to roses, a tulip bouquet, adds vibrant color, luscious petals and a more affordable price. Tulips are perennials and different types bloom at different points of the warm months. Red tulips bloom in early spring and the lily flowering tulips open in late fall.
Just a few brightly colored tulips tied together with silk ribbon makes a striking bridal bouquet. Tulip colors range from white to yellow to peach and red and even variegated colors.

Lilies
-
Calla lilies and lily of the valley both make lovely, large bridal bouquets. The calla is available in a full size with a large flower and long stem and a shorter miniature version. Lily of the valley is composed of several cascading flowers attached to one vine-like stem. It makes for eye-catching bouquets.
People commonly think of lilies as white flowers, but these blooms are available in a range of shades, from maroon to the bright orange associated with tiger lilies. Lilies allow florists to get very creative with bouquets, even utilizing water lilies for some brides.
Sweet Peas
-
An understated yet colorful flower, sweet peas are useful for smaller bridal bouquets. Commonly seen as a delicate flower, the sweet pea offers a range of colors and a strong sweet fragrance. This ruffled flower is a favorite for traditional weddings or those with an airy, light theme.
Consider a small bouquet of azure blue sweet peas to fit with a traditional ceremony or a collection of passionate red and pinks for the daring. These bloom from late spring into summer.
