Islamic Schools in Atlanta

Expectations regarding the use of the hijab (traditional Muslim head covering) vary from school to school.

Although cities in the Southeastern United States tend not to have very large Muslim populations, there is a significant enough group of Muslim families in the greater Atlanta area to support several Islamic schools. Fortunately, finding these schools is simply a matter of knowing where to look and what to look for.

  1. Clara Mohammad Elementary

    • This is a non profit, private K-12 school located on Fayetteville Road in Atlanta. It claims to be the only private African-American Muslim school to be fully accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission, The Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This school's emphasis is on making students aware of Islam's understanding of God and turning those students into effective citizens of the world.

    Dar Un-noor School

    • This school provides education for prekindergarten students through eighth grade. In total, the school is comprised of 188 students and 11 teachers, as of 2011, meaning there is one teacher for every 17 students. There are 180 school days in an average calendar year and students are generally in class for about seven hours each day.

    Nur Academy

    • A smaller school, Nur Academy, supports a total of 31 students, as of 2011. This is a co-ed private institution with students ranging from prekindergarten to fifth grade. These students attend school for 180 days in a year and an average of six hours per day. This school is located on Hank Aaron Drive between Ormond and Atlanta avenues.

    City of Knowledge

    • Started in August of 2006 as the brainchild of the Muslim community in the greater Atlanta area, City of Knowledge claims to be committed to high-quality academic performance that either meets or exceeds other private schools in the area. Its curriculum combines Islamic teachings with a hands-on learning environment. The school provides classes for students from pre-K to fifth grade, including classes in Arabic and the arts.
