There are several naming games designed to help parents select a name for their baby.

Selecting a name for your child is an important undertaking, one that expectant parents can agonize over for months while searching for the perfect name. Fortunately there are many tools out there designed to help choose a name, from websites, to books and magazines. There are also a variety of baby name games, often played at baby showers, that can help parents make their decision.

  1. Baby Name Race

    • This game is fun to play at baby showers. Each guest is given a piece of paper and a pen. In 60 seconds, each player has to write down as many names as possible that start with the same letters as the parents' names. When the 60 seconds is over, read all the names aloud. The guest with the most names is the winner. This is also a fun way for the prospective parents to get ideas for names.

    Baby Name Brainstorm

    • If the parents have not yet picked a baby name, this is a fun game to play at the baby shower to give the parents some inspiration as well as a keepsake. Purchase a colorful notebook and then pass it around to all the guests. Ask each guest to write down ideas for boy and girl names, along with any notes about why they like particular names, or what the name means. Also ask each person to sign their name by their suggestions.

    What's In a Name

    • Write the first names of everyone at the baby shower, then look up what each name means online, or in a baby name book. Write the names on one side of a piece of paper and the meanings on the other side, but be sure to mix up the order so they aren't matched up. Make copies and give one to each guest. Ask everyone to match the names with the meaning they think is correct. Set a time limit. Whoever gets the most right is the winner.

    Baby Name ABC's

    • This is another fun game that can provide inspiration to the parents if they have not yet chosen a baby name. Have one guest start by saying a baby name that starts with an A. The person next to them has to say a name that starts with a B, and so on. The game continues through the alphabet and then starts over again with A. No repeat names are allowed. Anyone who takes more than a few seconds is out of the game. Be sure to write the names to give the parents to look through.
