Charities in Maryland That Accept Donated Cars

A donated car can open up otherwise inaccessible employment opportunities.

Donating a car to a Maryland charity is a very streamlined process, especially when the donation request is completed online. Participating non-profit agencies use their websites to list donation-inclusive counties, donation paperwork requirements and charities of benefit. Most non-profits sell donated vehicles at auction. Some allow donors to choose their charity, while others are singularly associated with a specific charity. One Maryland non-profit employs mechanics who restore donated vehicles to operating condition.

  1. Donate for Charity, Inc.

    • Donate for Charity, Inc. picks up cars in Maryland within two hours of the towing request. Donors do not have to be present, as long as they provide the vehicle's identification number, approximate mileage, year, make and model at scheduling and provide a clear title at pick-up. Donated cars are then sold at auctions, with the proceeds going to the charity of the donor's choice. Some of these charities include Cure Autism Now, National Eating Disorders Association, U.S. Doctors for Africa, Blazesports America, Inc., Mercy for Animals, Surf Aid International, Glaucoma Research Foundation, Breast Cancer Fund and Angelcare Children's Aid International.

    Cars for Causes

    • Cars for Causes accepts car donations from many counties in Maryland including Somerset, Allegany, Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Howard, Prince George's, Garrett, Caroline, Carroll, Harford, and St. Mary's. Donation requirements and procedures are basically the same as those for Donate for Charity, Inc. Cars for Causes donors, however, are offered the opportunity to donate the auction proceedings from their car to one of 15,000 youth education-oriented charities. If donors have an outside charity to which they would like profits shared, 70 percent would go to the outside charity and 30 percent would go to a Cars for Causes charity.

    Kars for Kids

    • Kars for Kids picks up car donations from every city in Maryland. This charity gives a free vacation incentive to donors, and eases the donation process by requiring only the vehicle's year, make and model. Car titles, registration paperwork, vehicle identification numbers and car keys are not necessary for donations to be accepted. Pick ups are generally made within 72 hours of requests. Proceeds from auctioned donations support the national non-profit organization Joy for Our Youth, or J.O.Y. J.O.Y donations pay school tuition and summer camp fees for disadvantaged Jewish children.

    Vehicles for Change

    • Vehicles for Change repairs cars with worn parts and auctions others to sell functional vehicles at low rates to low-income families in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area. In 2011, for a down payment of less than $1,000, indigent families from 11 Maryland counties can purchase a car maintained to last an additional 24,000 miles. Donation requests only require a vehicle identification number, mileage and the donor's social security number. Donors are allowed a full fair market value tax deduction.
