PAWS is an acronym for the Progressive Animal Welfare Society. Established in 1967 in Washington state, the mission of PAWS is to find new homes for abandoned cats and dogs. Throughout the state the nonprofit organization has a shelter, clinic and satellite adoption centers. Not all of the animals have been abandoned, and PAWS also shelters stray dogs and cats until their owners have been tracked down. The organization collaborates with a variety of animal welfare agencies and veterinary clinics to create a safe environment for animals at risk. As well as its full-time staff members, PAWS also has a network of volunteers who help with everything from re-housing animals to assisting with the daily tasks around the various PAWS locations.
