Graduate Scholarships & Grants

Graduate Scholarships & Grants thumbnail
Graduate students have a variety of finance options to choose from.

Graduate students may not have the same number of opportunities to receive grants and scholarships as undergraduate students, but a little research will uncover the possibilities. College-based awards can be found through the college or university you are attending or through the alumni association. There are also organizations that offer scholarships to students in a particular field, and research grants are available to those pursuing degrees in certain fields, such as science and technology. For students who are working while completing a graduate degree, be aware that some employers offer tuition reimbursement.

  1. Grants and Awards from Colleges

    • Colleges and universities offer scholarships and grants, including discounts on tuition and cash awards. As of 2011, graduate students at the University of Pittsburgh who received an undergraduate degree from the college receive a one-time $5,000 scholarship. At the University of New Haven in Connecticut, alumni can receive $300 off every graduate level course and $400 off for students who hold a GPA of 3.5 and above. Stanford University offers a 15 percent discount to members of the Alumni Association.

    Jack Kent Cooke Foundation

    • The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation supports students in graduate school with several awards, fellowships and scholarships. The Dissertation Fellowship provides $25,000 to advanced doctoral degree students who are preparing a dissertation on the education of low-income students who demonstrate high academic achievement. Applicants must have unmet financial needs. The Graduate Arts Award gives up to $50,000 per year for three years to needy students who are nominated by a faculty member and are studying the arts or creative writing on the graduate level. In addition, the foundation awards up to $300,000 in cash to exceptional college graduates for graduate-level study.

    American Bar Association

    • The American Bar Association offers a Legal Opportunity Scholarship, which grants 20 law students $15,000 each in scholarship awards over their three years of law school. The scholarship is intended to promote an ethnically diverse group of students attending law school.

    National Society of Professional Engineers

    • The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) provides a $2,500 scholarship for graduate students pursuing an MBA or a master's degree in engineering management of public administration. The George B. Hightower Fellowship honors one outstanding student in engineering yearly, and the Milton F. Lunch Research Fellowship provides an eight-week summer program to engineering, architecture or construction graduate students to pursue education and research.
