LPN to RN Programs in New York City

New York City is an excellent choice to study nursing due to its extensive medical community and many nursing programs. There are some schools that offer an LPN to RN bridge program and others that simply grant advanced standing based on LPN credits earned. Either way, there are a few program offerings to choose from that may meet your needs.

1 Helene Fuld College of Nursing

Helene Fuld College of Nursing offers an LPN to RN program. In order to qualify for admission, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen, hold a high school diploma and current LPN license and have at least one year of LPN working experience. The applicant must have satisfactory passing scores on four tests, covering writing, reading comprehension, mathematics and basic nursing skills. Submission of three references and a faculty interview are required. Completion of college-level chemistry and mathematics courses or a satisfactory score on placement tests also are required.

The program may be completed with four quarters of full-time study. There are two entrance dates for each quarter throughout the year.

Tuition varies, depending on whether students are New York residents or not and for full-time and part-time students. Federal financial aid is available to those who qualify.

2 Bronx Community College

Bronx Community College (BCC) offers a fast-track program for LPNs who want to complete RN academic training. In addition to the basic RN admission requirements, the LPN must submit proof of at least one year of LPN work experience and pass the National League for Nursing examination. The LPN will receive 16 credits toward the total 67 credits needed for graduation. Those who graduated from BCC's LPN program will receive an additional 4 credits toward the degree. The program takes approximately 18 months to complete.

3 Kingsborogh Community College

Kingsborough Community College (KCC) does not have a formal LPN to RN program, though they do offer advanced standing to LPN students. An LPN may test out of one of the introductory clinical nursing courses. Applicants to the program must first be admitted to the college as a liberal arts major. After college acceptance, the applicant may apply directly to the RN program once all remedial course work has been completed. The remedial courses include four preclinical courses in psychology, English, mathematics and biology. There are also prerequisites to the preclinical courses. Once these courses have been completed, the student must take the preadmission RN exam. In total, the program takes approximately three years to complete.

4 Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing

Long Island College Hospital School of Nursing (LICHSON) does not offer a formal LPN to RN program, though they do offer advanced standing to LPNs. In order to gain eight credits of advanced standing, an LPN must submit proof of at least one year of work experience. Prior to application, a prospective candidate must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills; the score is used as part of the admission process. The deadline for early admission is generally in March and the late deadline is in April. Dates vary, so be sure to check the school's website for the most accurate information.

The program may be finished with two years of full-time study and financial aid is available to those who qualify.

5 Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing

Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing does not offer a formal LPN to RN program, though they do offer advanced standing to LPNs. Up to 16 credits may be awarded to an LPN. The application deadline is generally in April, though prospective students should check with the school's website for the latest information. The program generally takes two years to complete for an LPN receiving advanced standing.

The tuition varies for each of the five semesters of the program. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.
