Basement Mildew Solutions

Basements tend to be dark damp locations where mildew and mold and survive and thrive. This can be problematic for a homeowner who does not want the smell of mildew throughout her house.   1. Find the Source

    • Search for the source of moisture and eliminate it. If it is a leak in the basement foundation, you may need to call a repairperson to fix the problem. Also check to make sure the clothes dryer air handler is attached properly to the vent. If not, this could cause an increase in the humidity in the basement and result in a mildew problem.

    Provide Air

    • Place a couple of fans in your basement at opposite corners of the room and turn them on full blast. The circulating air will help dry the basement out and prevent mildew.

    Clean

    • If you find mildew, you need to remove it. Throw out all furniture and clothing that has mildew on it. Fill a bucket with hot water and a 1/2 cup of bleach. With a brush use the water and bleach mix and scrub the walls and floors. Dry with old towels.

    Dehumidifier

    • Purchase a dehumidifier and place it in your basement. Turn it on and let it run. The best dehumidifiers detect the humidity in an area and turn on automatically when it reaches a certain point.
