Charities That Take Used Computers
Computers were once coveted and valuable household items. Now that we understand how quickly technology updates and changes, we also recognize that computers are becoming more and more disposable. It seems like a waste to simply toss them on the curb. There are several non-profit charities, organizations and corporations that will take your used personal computer and donate it to someone in need.
-
The Lazarus Foundation
-
The Lazarus Foundation not only accepts donations of used computers (preferably Pentium 4 or higher and less than four years old), but has a staff of technicians to refurbish them and restore or install the appropriate software. This organization is based in Maryland and accepts donations from both private individuals and businesses. Donations of both computer equipment and cash are encouraged and are tax deductible.
The National Cristina Foundation
-
The National Cristina Foundation is a charity that donates used computers from corporations or individuals to those with special needs. This includes organizations such as clubs and schools. The Foundation does not make donations to individuals. Desktop and notebook computers are accepted as well as other hardware such as printers, keyboards and monitors. Software is also accepted with the license agreements. Pentium 3 processors are the minimum specifications required for donations.

The Surplus Exchange
-
The Surplus Exchange accepts a variety of gently used office equipment, which it donates to its partner non-profit organizations. The original office is still in Kansas City but there is also an office in Santa Fe. The main purpose of the organization is preventing e-waste and helping local non-profit organizations. Their recipients also include students in need and fledgling businesses.
Manufacturers
-
Manufacturers of computer hardware such as Dell, Hewlett Packard and IBM all have recycling programs that accept and refurbish used computers and donate them to worthy causes. These companies main motivations revolve around efficient disposal, preventing waste and helping those that face economic hardship. Dell accepts any brand of computer as a donation, HP is connected to the Christina Foundation and IBM helps develop initiatives to help address social issues in local, national and international communities.
