A gift card is a great alternative for that picky teen on your list.

When the holidays are near and you are preparing your Christmas shopping list, you may be at a loss about what to get that special teen in your life. Teenagers can be extremely difficult to shop for, as they tend to be picky when it comes to personal items and may fill their Christmas list with expensive, big-ticket items. For cheap gift ideas, take their hobbies and interests into consideration.

  1. Movies and Music

    • While you may not know the way your teenager's brain works, you can almost guarantee he spends a lot of his free time watching movies or television shows, or listening to music. Movies and music gifts don't have to break the bank. CDs can range anywhere from $8 to $15, and during the holidays many DVDs are on sale. If you aren't sure exactly what the teen's genre of choice is, you could get an iTunes gift card or a gift certificate to a consumer electronics store. A movie-themed gift basket would also get a lot of use; such a basket may include candy, microwaveable popcorn and movie theater tickets.

    Gift Certificates

    • Gift certificates give hard-to-shop-for teenagers something they really want for Christmas: a choice. Most gift certificates and gift cards allow you to pick the amount, which is extremely helpful when you are shopping on a tight budget. Some popular gift certificate choices for teenagers include fast food chains, movie theaters, iTunes, video game stores, hobby stores, salons (for the girls) and consumer electronics stores.

    Books and Magazines

    • With the recent trend of teenage paranormal romance series like Twilight, teenage girls are reading more than ever before. Not only is buying a book for your teenager a way to encourage her to read, but it isn't an expensive gift choice. You could get a paperback for around $10, or choose from book accessories like a book light, bookmark or gift certificate to a book store. Magazines are another great choice for both teenage girls and boys. You might get them a subscription to their favorite fashion, video game, sports or teen-interest-related magazine.

    Teenage Girls

    • Teenage girls might seem impossible to shop for, but in reality there are a number of gifts that would satisfy her and are inexpensive. Think first of beauty and style products. You could get her makeup, if you know the shades or brands she enjoys wearing, or give her a new makeup bag for Christmas. Hair accessories are also inexpensive, and may include items such as barrettes, hair pins, headbands or scrunchies. Fashion jewelry is another great choice for teenage girls, as it is inexpensive and suitable for almost any teen.

    Teenage Boys

    • When you know their hobbies and interests, teenage boys can be easy to shop for during the holidays. If they have a car, they might like a variety of car accessories, like a steering wheel cover or cleaning supplies. Teenage boys love music, and instead of spending a lot of money for a new MP3 player, you could get him a new set of ear buds or headphones that won't cost too much. You could also get him a used video game or subscription to a video game or computer game magazine.
