When to Prune Hibiscus Trees?
Hibiscus are houseplants, shrubs and trees prized for their showy flowers. Pruning is a key aspect of hibiscus care, regardless of whether the plant is grown outdoors year-round in a warm climate or spends winters indoors in a northern climate. Hibiscus plants thrive with pruning and only bloom on new growth. Cuts should be made immediately above a bud or lateral branch to avoid leaving ugly stubs. Does this Spark an idea?

Warm Climates
-
In warm climates, hibiscus trees can be heavily pruned in early spring. This pruning in February or March helps to stimulate new growth and blooming and prevents the hibiscus from developing a spindly appearance. Heavy pruning should not be conducted in winter or late fall.
Cold Climates
-
If the hibiscus is being cultivated in a cooler climate, it must be brought inside for the winter to survive. It should be moved to a warm indoor location before night temperatures fall below 40 degrees F. The hibiscus should be heavily pruned before it is brought inside. The plant branches can be cut back to within 4 or 5 inches of the main stem. This pruning strategy can help eliminate any pests that have made summer homes on the hibiscus. The plant will also perform better the following summer if it is pruned to prevent blooming over the winter.

Maintenance Pruning
-
Hibiscus trees may require maintenance pruning at any time of the year. Light maintenance pruning is necessary if the hibiscus has any diseased or dead wood, weak or drooping growth or rubbing branches. Maintenance pruning can also be done to help a hibiscus retain an attractive or even shape or to stimulate blooming.
During the Growing Season
-
Hibiscus can be pruned during the active growing season. However, this type of pruning delays and reduces blooming if it is done too vigorously, as hibiscus blooms on new growth. To minimize disruption of blooming or appearance, only cut the longest third of the branches at a given time, then wait a month before pruning another third of the longest branches. This light, periodic pruning can reduce or eliminate the need for heavy pruning.
