Baking Parties for Kids
Combine a baking competition with a birthday party for a hands-on kids celebration. Invite friends over to engage in a friendly competition in the style of a reality-TV baking show. Girls and boys alike will enjoy making -- and eating -- their sweet creations. Does this Spark an idea?

Dress-Up
-
Before heading to the kitchen to bake, have the party guests get dressed in the proper clothing. Pass out aprons to protect clothing. Kids can decorate their aprons with fabric markers or paint. Ask girls to tie their hair in ponytails and hand out hair nets or chef hats.
Design
-
Divide the party guests into teams. Pass out a bakery "order" like on the reality show "Cake Boss." Include details such as the customer's favorite colors and activities. Show the bakers the supplies they have to work with. Set out the available baking pans, bowls and cookie cutters. Prepare a batch of crispy cereal treats to use as sturdy filler for designs. Make fondant in advance. Bakers can talk about their ideas and sketch out a plan before beginning.

Bake
-
Prepare boxed cake mixes according to the instructions on the box. Divide similar cake pans between the teams. Consider using one square pan, one round pan and one glass bowl for a half-round-shaped cake. Once baked, help cut the cakes into the desired shapes, if necessary. Kids can frost and embellish according to their designs.
Judging and Prizes
-
Once all the cakes are complete, have the teams bring their designs to the judges' table, which could be a panel of their parents. Judge the cakes and award small trophies, or give certificates to all participants highlighting a positive aspect of their cakes. For example, one cake could be designated "Most Creative;" another might be, " Most Colorful." If it is a birthday party, place candles in the winning cake and sing, "Happy Birthday." Send home cake boxes with a sampling of their creations.
