Healthy & Fun Homemade Snacks for Children
Healthy snacks can be made at home instead of buying them pre-made at the store. There are many snacks that are easy enough for children to help make for themselves. Children who suffer from some food allergies, such as nuts or dairy products, will need to be careful when making snacks, so they don't include ingredients that will cause sickness.

Trail Mix
-
Trail mix is a simple mixture of numerous ingredients. Most trail mixes include nuts, dried fruits and some kind of sugary snack. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants, so a good choice in sugar for the mix would be some dark chocolate candies. Any nuts are good -- peanuts, cashews or almonds. Dried fruits can include raisins, apricots, apples and bananas. The mixture is then placed in a baggy and can be kept in the freezer or refrigerator for freshness. This is a great snack for school, camping or on the bus.
Fruit, Vegetables and Dip
-
Fresh fruits and vegetables are great snacks and made even greater with a tasty dip. Yogurt is a refreshing dip choice that is good with both fruits and vegetables. Peanut butter is also a healthy dip, because it is rich in protein. Try a nut dip, such as hazelnut butter, or something different. The website Kaboose recommends flavored yogurts; and they have a tasty recipe that consists of mixing a small amount of cinnamon into some French vanilla-flavored yogurt.

Smoothies
-
Smoothies are a snack that children will have to have parental help making. But this healthy snack has many varieties. Low-fat yogurt is a better choice for making smoothies than ice cream. Blend 2 cups of low-fat yogurt in the blender with a small amount of ice and any choice of fruits. Fruit ideas could include strawberries, banana, mixed berry or a tropical mix such as papaya and pineapple. Make a peaches and cream smoothie using canned peaches and French vanilla-flavored yogurt.
Roll-Ups
-
Meat roll-ups are a healthy snack that can give children a good dose of protein. This snack will give them an energy boost. Pick a piece of meat. Healthy choices would be turkey and chicken. Smear it with a little bit of mustard and roll it up. Low-fat cream cheese is another tasty smear for a meat roll-up. If the child is not in the mood for meat, a peanut butter and jelly roll-up is a fun snack. Just smear some peanut butter and favorite flavor of jelly on a corn tortilla and roll it up.
