Healthy Baby Games

Baby games help infants learn and develop.

Raising a healthy baby requires playing games with the baby and constant stimulation. Games for the baby help with infant development and allow the baby to reach developmental milestones. While games will not prevent problems like catching a cold, they will help with the baby’s brain growth and development.

  1. Dancing with Baby

    • In the first few months of life, a baby might not seem very active and might seem like she cries, sleeps and needs diaper changes. When a baby is grumpy, even newborns, mommy or daddy can put on music and dance with the baby. At a younger age, stick to swaying and gentle movements to music. As the baby gets older, he might prefer more rowdy dancing or silly movements.

    Peek-a-boo

    • Peek-a-boo is a classic baby game parents can play with their child from newborn until almost one year. Web MD points out that a baby doesn’t realize parents are still there when hiding behind hands until the baby is around nine months old, so the game is fascinating to babies.

    Body Awareness Body Squirt

    • During bath time, parents can help babies start identifying part of their body, such as their tummy. This is best for babies who are around seven months to about 18 months old who are able to sit up in the tub. The parents fill a gentle squirt toy with warm bath water and say “Where’s your tummy?” or “Where’s your foot?” to the baby. The parents can then point at the body part, such at pointing at the tummy, and then say “there’s your tummy!” Parents then squirt the stomach with the squirt toy and tell the child she is squirting her tummy. This will not only cause giggles from the tickling sensation, but also helps the baby start to understand her own body.

    Fabric Fun

    • Give the baby various fabrics in bright colors to play with. For example, give a swath of silk, a corduroy stuffed animal and a cotton shirt. All of them should have a bright and cheerful color to grab the baby’s attention. The baby will find the various fabrics interesting and will discover different feeling items.

    Song Singing

    • Singing is not only a way to bond with the baby or sooth the baby, it also helps a baby build vocabulary and learn how to talk. Web MD suggests singing to the baby in various styles to find out what the baby likes and then making up songs and tunes about what mommy or daddy and baby are doing.
