Online resources can help ESL beginners.

Learning English as a second language requires learning how to listen to the language and understand when people are speaking, and it requires knowing the vocabulary words others speak. Beginners in the language can benefit from online activities that provide help for vocabulary and listening to understand.

  1. Online Games

    • English listening and vocabulary games are available online for ESL students. The vocabulary and listening game styles require the player to match the word and image. If the answer in right, the game has an audio system that says the English word for listening practice.

    Online Quizzes

    • Online quizzes are one option available to beginners in learning English to test vocabulary skills. The students take a quiz for vocabulary words and find out where they have weaknesses and where the words are well known. For example, the quiz might include clothing items. The individual might have no problem with various shirt names, but she might confuse shorts, pants, skirts and similar lower body garments.

    Online Puzzles

    • Online puzzles are available that are designed to help students with vocabulary while making the process of learning enjoyable. Puzzles might include crosswords, in which the student must figure out the words based on the clues or word searches. In general, beginning students should start with word-search puzzles and then build up to crosswords as they start to understand some English.

    Listening Stories

    • ESL students beginning their lessons might listen to children's stories online. The student hears the story while seeing the words on the computer screen. The stories start with simple children's short stories, which provide simple vocabulary words, allowing beginners to focus on the sounds.
