A career in transcription requires highly specialized skills.

As a medical or legal transcriptionist, you must be able to transcribe accurately what a speaker is saying, and you must be fast. In exchange for having acquired those skills, your reward package is large. As of May 2008, the average wage for a medical transcriber was about $15.41 an hour. The CB Salary website says that the average national salary for a legal transcriptionist is $45,177. To find work in one of these positions, you must undergo rigorous training.

  1. Medical: Rasmussen College

    • For medical transcriptionists, Rasmussen College offers an associate degree in medical transcription. According to the Universities website, this program prepares students to write medical conference minutes and make medical reports and orders. The course offers skills on dictation, simultaneous recording, medical terminology and note analysis. Rasmussen offers this particular program at its locations in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Ocala, Florida.

    Medical: Empire College

    • Empire College, which offers medical transcription training in Santa Rosa, California, focuses on teaching its students how to accurately transcribe medical records and other related material. However, according to the college website, what sets the Empire program apart from similar ones at other institutions is that it takes the training one step further. As a student, you will learn about medical office software, the terminology of the medical field, anatomy and physiology, along with the training you receive to become a fast, accurate transcriptionist. It is a four-quarter program, and the college will award you a diploma if you successfully complete all course work. Through Empire's program, you will learn such skills as business English and medical insurance coding. The institution will also teach you about various medical insurance plans.

    Legal: U.S. Career Institute

    • The U.S. Career Institute located in Fort Collins, Colorado, opened its doors in 1961. It offers an online program on legal transcription. The college divides the material into five sections, or packs. Pack I introduces you to the world of legal transcription. It is the shortest pack, containing four parts. By Pack V, the college considers you ready to gain practical experience. You must perform a series of real-life transcriptions. In these final sessions, you will gain practical experience reading stenotyped material.

    Legal: Sheridan Technical Center

    • Sheridan Technical Center is an online program for an individual who wants to become a legal stenographer. In this Internet program, you will learn to use the steno writer to make records of court proceedings, such as preliminary exams, charges to the jury by judges and witness testimony. Sheridan will also teach you how to listen for different speech styles. In addition, Sheridan will instruct you on shorthand, particularly the Phoenix Theory machine shorthand system.

      The school requires you to go through an orientation and a basic skills test as well as participate in a contact interview before entering classes.
