A career in interior design is nurtured best by certified professionals in a university atmosphere. Interior design schools offers a wide variety of instructors from various support areas in the interior design field, who are most often industry professionals with work experience. In addition to their instructors, interior design schools often have state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. The most successful interior design schools also have excellent job placement records.

Fashion Institute of Technology State University of New York

The Fashion Institute of Technology, also known as FIT, is an internationally recognized school for design, fashion, art, communications and business. FIT opened in 1944 with 100 students before receiving its accreditation in 1957. It offers an undergraduate interior design program that gives students the opportunity to intern for New York interior designers and top firms such as Gensler and the Rockwell Group. The interior design program at FIT caters to 400 students and is a rigorous program including the history and theory of interior design.

University of California Berkeley

The extension program at UCLA Berkeley is an undergraduate program that combines interior design and architecture with its Interior Architecture program. The Interior Design and Interior Architecture Certificate Program at UCLA Berkley is a noted program for design professionals who are in need of a different orientation or outlook. Upon graduation, the students of this program receive a state certificate of interior design. With 29 courses to take in interior design and architecture, Berkeley students can complete the program within six years.

Florida International University

Noted as Miami's first and only four-year public research institution, Florida State University's Interior Design program offers two degrees: Master of Arts in Interior Design and Master of Interior Design. The accredited program is competitive and spans over five years. The program requires foundational courses and work in advanced concepts. However, students with bachelor degrees in interior design may opt out of the foundational course work.

Interior Design Institute

The Interior Design Institute, located in Southern California, was founded in 1984. The Interior Design Institute offers a certification in interior design, an Associate of Arts degree, and a Bachelor of Arts degree. The institute prides itself in its broad course work and small class sizes, the average being 15 students. Lecture courses have a maximum of 49 students. Institute produces graduates who have worked for firms such as Walt Disney, Mercedez Benz and Fleetwood Enterprises.
