Many married couples and their families have problems that require the services of marriage or family counselors who've earned graduate or post-graduate degrees offered by accredited universities. Three physical and three online universities have been ranked as the best marriage and family counseling schools in the nation.

Azusa Pacific University, located in Azusa, California, offers more than 80 academic courses. As of 2009, U.S. News and World Report magazine ranked it as one of the best new universities in the nation. Its faculty includes professors, assistant professors and instructors who are studied and experienced in the fields of psychotherapy, psychology, and marriage and family therapy. The university offers two marriage and family therapy graduate programs: master of arts in clinical psychology with a marriage and family therapy concentration, and doctor of psychology in clinical psychology with a family psychology concentration.

Through its College of Education and Human Development, the University of Minnesota offers a graduate program in marriage and family therapy. In 2010, the Minneapolis-based university was ranked fourth best graduate school in the nation by U.S. News & World Report due to its clinical psychology department. Its College of Education and Human Development faculty has become widely recognized for excellence in teaching and research, and many of its members have written articles for books and academic journals. Graduate students may qualify for fellowships, and the school offers a Ph.D. in marriage and family therapy.

Many students, especially those already in the workforce, prefer to take courses through an accredited online school. This allows them to tailor their studies to fit their schedules and also can be less expensive than enrolling in a physical school.
