North Carolina Exam Requirements & Procedures for Cosmetology License

Cosmetologists provide personal services such as hair care, skin care, makeup and manicures. North Carolina requires cosmetologists to have a license to practice in the state. The cosmetologist must meet the requirements of the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners to qualify for a license to practice.

  1. Education

    • North Carolina cosmetologists must complete a cosmetology program consisting of 1,500 hours of training. Cosmetologists must also complete performances on a live model or mannequin before taking the state examination. The performances consist of scalp and hair treatments, hair styling, chemical hair treatments, nail care, facials and hair removal. The applicant for the cosmetology examination must submit certification of the live performances to qualify to take the exam.

    Apprenticeship

    • The applicant for a cosmetology license must complete a 1,200-hour cosmetology program and at least six months in an apprenticeship program under the supervision of a North Carolina licensed cosmetologist. The applicant must complete live performances in addition to the cosmetology program and six-month apprenticeship.

    Examination

    • North Carolina cosmetologists must complete a written and practical examination to qualify for a license. The written portion of the exam consists of scientific concepts, hair care, skin care and nail care. License candidates must demonstrate knowledge in these areas. The practical portion of the cosmetology examination consists of set up, hair cutting and styling, chemical hair processes, facials and manicures. The practical portion of the examination tests the skills of the candidate in cosmetology practices. Candidates must bring a mannequin head and hand for the practical part of the examination.

    Continuing Education

    • North Carolina cosmetologists must renew the state license every three years. The state requires the license holder to complete 24 hours of continuing education to renew the license. Licensed cosmetologists must submit written documentation when applying for license renewal in North Carolina.
