AARP-Approved Driving Schools
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Driver Safety Program classroom and online courses instruct drivers about current highway laws, defensive driving techniques and safe operating practices in a challenging driving environment. While the courses targets drivers 55 years old and up, people of all ages can participate. Students learn to take into account age-related changes in vision, hearing and response time. Cassroom courses take place at libraries, schools, senior centers, churches,and other public institutions approved by AARP, and drivers may receive discounted auto insurance rates after completing the course.

Driving Skills

Test your knowledge of driving rules. Improve your driving skills. Take a pre-test to determine your knowledge of driving rules. The instruction covers defensive driving skills such as following another car at a safe distance, changing lanes and turning at busy intersections. It also includes anticipating the effects of medication on driving, minimizing the danger of blind spots and monitoring your own and other drivers' skills. Other course topics deal with eliminating distractions and using safety belts, air bags and antilock brakes as well as other technologies. The course costs $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members as of 2011.

The AARP course lasts between six and eight hours. Find a convenient location. Navigate your browser to the AARP website's "Find a Course" page (see link in Resources section). Enter your address, including the zip code, then click "Select." The next page will contain multiple locations within a specified radius of your zip code and the dates the courses take place. The courses will last between six and eight hours scheduled on one or two days. For example, the entire course may take place on a Saturday or during two sessions, one on Thursday and the other on Friday.

Online Course

Consider the online driver safety course. Advantages of the online driver safety course include taking the course at your own pace and at a convenient time convenient. Customer service is available 24 hours a day. The online course costs $15.95 for AARP members and $19.95 for non-members as of 2011. Some, but not all, states accept the online course for insurance rate reduction. Check with your insurance agent before electing this option.
Host a Course

DVD player If your organization has an accessible room with a VCR, TV or DVD player, hosting an AARP driver safety course allows you to give back to the community, encourage safe driving and promote mobility among older adults. AARP provides the instructors, class materials and promotional material. For more information or to sign up, navigate your browser to the AARP website (see links in References section). AARP driving courses take place only at approved locations.
Volunteer

Volunteer to teach a course. Volunteer to teach a course. According to AARP, more than 9,000 volunteers provide instruction to approximately 500,000 individuals annually.
