Costume Style
-
Catwalk costumes can run the gamut from something simple like a Japanese kimono to a more complex costume that mimics a certain animal or object. Let the event you're attending dictate your specific style of catwalk costume. For example, for a fashion-oriented event, show off your distinctive style by modifying an old-fashioned style of clothing for modern appeal. At an event that's held for the fun of it, such as a Halloween costume contest where participants show off to the judges by walking the catwalk, almost any type of costume, from the traditional witch or zombie to the ridiculous, such as a crayon or sandwich, can be used.
Shoes
-
Shoes play an important role in many catwalk costumes. Find a pair that coordinates with the costume; because of the height of the catwalk, people may be sitting at eye-level with your feet. Although an old pair of sneakers may be much more comfortable than mile-high heels, people will notice if the outfit doesn't match, so opt for appropriate footwear. Practice walking in the shoes to get used to their feel if they are different from your ordinary shoes.

Hairstyle
-
Hairstyles, especially in fashion-related catwalk events, can make a huge difference in the appearance of a costume. Ask an experienced hairdresser to execute a style that works with the feeling you are trying to express. For example, when wearing a period costume, style your hair in a style similar to that worn by people of the time. For more modern apparel, don't be afraid wear something that may seem outlandish if needed, as it will draw attention to your costume and make it memorable.
Practice
-
Wearing costumes, especially ones that involve shoes or items that you don't use in everyday clothing, can take some getting used to. Before the event where you show off on the catwalk, practice wearing the costume. Put the costume on and find out what parts you'll need assistance with on the day of the event. Be sure to have someone with you backstage on the day of the event if necessary. Once the costume is on, wear it for awhile to get used to its feel; practice your runway strut several times in a clear spot. Get used to turning around at a specific point to avoid potential embarrassment on the day of the event.
