What Type of Foods Are There at Indian Weddings?
Indian weddings are often lavish and extravagant events full of customs and traditions. Food is important to the Indian culture and has a major role in an Indian wedding. Different regions of India serve specific food at weddings. Make certain to have the specific Indian foods at your wedding feast to make for a day full of love, memories and happy guests.

North Indian Wedding

A North Indian wedding serves finger foods and snacks as soon as guests arrive at the wedding venue. Drinks are also served at this time, ranging from juices to cocktails. After the pheras (the completion of the wedding), guests will enjoy the main course and then desserts. Shahi paneer which is paneer (fresh cheese), cream, tomatoes and spices combined is often a main course. Another main course is dal makhani which are boiled lentils. Pulao, a rice dish is sometimes served. Mixed vegetables and chicken are also a main course choice.
West Indian Wedding

Food is served on freshly washed banana leaves during a West Indian wedding. Meals are often vegetarian. Onion and garlic are not used in any dishes. The main courses can range from rotli (bread), daal (prepared dried lentils, peas or beans), and rice. Desserts follow the main courses and can include basundi (sweetened milk) or shrikhand (sweet dish made of strained yogurt). Battha also known as buttermilk is the drink of choice at the wedding. The wedding meal ends with paan which is a betel leaf chew that helps with digestion and acts as a mouth freshener.

East Indian Wedding

The meal begins with snacks, finger foods and drinks. The main courses follow which are often macher kaalia (fish), mishti doi (sweet curd) and potol posto (vegetable dish). There is an emphasis on sweet flavor in the snacks, finger foods, and main courses. Rice is a major part of the main courses. A variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals are served.
South Indian Wedding

A South Indian wedding occurs early in the morning. Guests enjoy finger foods accompanied by coffee and juice before the ceremony. After the wedding rituals take place, the main courses are served. The main courses are often sweet and feature rice courses such as pulav and pooris. The food is served on banana leaves.
North East Indian Wedding

Food at this wedding can be vegetarian or non-vegetarian. There is often main courses such as pork ribs with shiitake mushrooms, beef with seasonal green vegetables, and pork with bamboo shoots. Fish and rice dishes are also served. Desserts include fruit salads and pastries with cream or chocolate.
