Military ROTC programs at the university level train students for careers as an officer in the military.

While there are no fully-functional military schools in Tennessee, several colleges and universities offer military Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) departments specializing in the training of cadets. Tennessee ROTC schools include the University of Memphis, Vanderbilt University, Carson-Newman College and Middle Tennessee State University. These military training schools offer moral, physical and academic support for student success.

  1. University of Memphis

    • The University of Memphis offers a Naval ROTC program specifically for the mental, moral and physical development of Midshipmen, Marines and Officer Candidates. Cadets in the Naval ROTC department of the University of Memphis are prepped for careers in the Naval Service at the highest levels of command, citizenship and government.

    Vanderbilt University

    • Vanderbilt University started its Army ROTC program in 1947 as solely a Medical Corps unit for medical school students. The program was eventually expanded to include the Chemical Corps and Corps of Engineering curriculums. Today, Vanderbilt University's ROTC department focuses on general studies of the Military Science program. Leadership and management skills are learned throughout the ROTC course, disciplining both men and women to take on such responsibilities as Second Lieutenants in the United States Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard.

    Carson-Newman College

    • The Carson-Newman College ROTC program, started in 1971, contains the Military Science Department for developing leadership and management skills for students to pursue both military and civilian careers. Students in the Army ROTC program are prepped to become officers in the U.S. Army and National Guard, as well as for participation in the Color Guard, Ranger Challenge, Officers Christian Fellowship and annual Military Ball.

    Middle Tennessee State University

    • The Army ROTC program at the Middle Tennessee State University's Department of Military Science is a college elective taken with other college courses. The department contains military courses developed with all branches of the U.S. Army in mind. As such, students learn basic military education and fundamental leadership and management skills. Students of the Military Science department learn about Army management, leadership and technical skills.
