A wedding planner's No. 1 job is to relieve stress.

Planning a wedding can be one of the most stressful events of a bride's life. Because every little detail can make or break a dream wedding, all the decisions can wear a woman down. A wedding planner's job is to work with the bride and groom, easing the stress of planning, while saving them or their parents time and money. To do this successfully, wedding planners absolutely must be very detail-oriented, organized, composed and professional.

  1. Organizing

    • The planner will begin by communicating with the bride and groom to find out what their wants and needs are in order to make their day extra special. Then, the wedding planner must find the venue and coordinate meetings with local vendors so their services can be booked well in advance. Wedding planners keep the bride and groom on track financially. Planners must keep detailed records so the bride and groom do not exceed their budget.

    Vendors

    • Wedding planners develop relationships after becoming familiar with local vendors, such as caterers, florists, bakers, photographers, DJs and interior designers. Planners get a feel for who is the best in their area, and they know how to work to each vendor's strengths. Through networking, they are able to obtain more reasonable prices than what a bride could get on her own. Wedding planners negotiate and review contracts with each vendor, ensuring that all service outlined in the documents are received on time.

    Wedding Day Details

    • When the day finally arrives, a wedding planner faces the daunting task of handling all the final details while the bride and groom are getting ready. Often, there's a location for the ceremony, and another one for the reception, which can be a challenge. The wedding planner is usually busy most of the day, greeting vendors and getting everything set up. He will also pin all the flowers on the wedding party. Before the ceremony begins, the wedding planner's job is to make sure everyone in the wedding party is on location, dressed and ready to go.

    Unusual Duties

    • Sometimes a wedding planner is forced to act as a mediator between the bride or groom and difficult family members or guests. He may also have to keep the wedding party's dressing room stocked with snacks and drinks. As the reception winds down, the planner will begin boxing up any gifts and personal items that the bride and groom will take with them.
