Illinois Veteran Grant Benefits

For residents of the Prairie State who served their country in the U.S. military, the Illinois Veteran Grant program may pay for post-service education in a state post-secondary institution. Qualifying veterans seeking higher educational opportunities should inquire about the Illinois Veteran Grant at the financial aid office of the school they want to attend, or through the office of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs.

  1. Eligibility

    • Honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. armed forces who resided in Illinois at least six months prior to entering military service and return to the state within six months of discharge are eligible for the Illinois Veteran Grant (IVG). Veterans must have a minimum of one year of active duty to qualify, but those on active duty in foreign lands during times of armed conflict do not have to meet the minimum 12-month standard.

    Benefits

    • Tuition and certain fees at public institutions of higher learning in Illinois are covered by the IVG. Room and board are not included under the program. While mandatory school fees are included, other optional fees must be paid by the student-veteran. Any refundable fees are ineligible for coverage under the grant.

    Illinois Troops to Teachers Program

    • Veterans interested in becoming educators may qualify for the Illinois Troops to Teachers Program, which helps those with a minimum of six years of U.S. military service to enter the teaching field for kindergarten through 12th grade. Veterans with a bachelor's degree in certain subjects may be able to teach in those areas. The program aids veterans through mentoring, career advice and teaching employment referrals for state public schools.

Other Illinois Educational Grants for Veterans

    • Other grants and scholarships offered to veterans by the state of Illinois include the Illinois National Guard Scholarship, which pays tuition and some fees at state colleges or universities for enlisted personnel and those up to the rank of lieutenant with a minimum of 12 months service in the Illinois Army/Air National Guard. Each county may award an annual Children of Veterans Scholarship to the University of Illinois for children of veterans whose served in the military between the Second World War and the Vietnam conflict.
