Students should request permission from the principal or dean before starting a formal organization.

Obesity in children has more than tripled in the last 30 years, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's important to encourage children to take charge of their health through student-organized and student-run health activities and programs. Students may be more likely to improve their health if encouraged by other students.

  1. Nutrition Organization

    • School lunches may become a health issue. Many believe that government-subsidized school lunches are unhealthy and can encourage students to make poor food choices. Start a nutrition club at school that teaches students about healthy foods, brown-bag lunch ideas, and the positive impact that eating more healthfully will have on their bodies inside and out. Petition for better school lunches or work on getting organic produce donated for low-income families with students at your school.

    Exercise Club

    • People who exercise together are seven times more likely to stick with a routine than those who go it alone, according to research from Indiana University. Start an exercise club and encourage meetings or workout sessions at least four times a week. Many colleges have gyms or exercise equipment that is free to use for students. Look into getting a discounted group and student membership at a private health club. Or ask the physical education teacher about allowing time after school for your club to use the school gym facilities.

    Meditation Club

    • According to several studies, meditation reduces stress, increases healthy cardiovascular function, and reduces fatigue and insomnia. With all the pressure put on students to do well in school, pursue extracurricular activities and possibly work part time, the life of a student can be stressful. Decide on calm places to meet, such as the beach, a park or a member's home, and have quiet independent or guided meditation sessions. Teach members about the benefits of meditation and how to practice on their own.

    Student-Run Health Publication

    • Create a health publication alongside the student newspaper. Ask the teacher who oversees the student newspaper about creating an additional publication with a group of volunteers. Give each volunteer a specific health category to write about, such as exercise, Eastern medicine, developments in medical technology and nutrition. Include information about the healthy teams, clubs and organizations at your school so students wishing to find health-related activities have a central place to look.
