Temperatures for Growing Grass

Temperatures for Growing Grass thumbnail
Different grasses need different climates.

Growing grass generally involves two time considerations: when you should plant it and how often you need to mow it. The temperature and climate are very important in making these determinations. The average temperature of where you live determines what time of year you should plant and when you need to mow it. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Seed Planting

    • The best time of year for planting grass seed is once the temperature is regularly above 50 degrees Fahrenheit in your area. Once the air reaches this temperature, this should mean that the ground is thawed and you can easily dig, since you need the dig up the ground at least 6 inches deep. At the same time, the air and ground are not so hot that water will evaporate too quickly.

    Warm Season Grass

    • Some grasses are genetically designed to grow in warmer temperatures than others. Grasses such as Bermuda, Centipede, Bahia, St. Augustine and Zoysia all grow primarily in Texas and across the southeast. These types of grass need warmer soil for planting in order to eventually take root. You should begin planting these grasses once the temperature regularly reaches 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Planting Time

    • The exact time of year to plant grass seed depends on the region you live in. The early spring months are good for planting in any region, but they are practically the only time to do so in the Northeast and Midwest. By contrast, you may be able to plant at any time of year if you are in the South or Southeast. The region also determines the type of grass you should grow; make sure you plant the appropriate grass for your climate.

    Mowing Time

    • No matter where you live, you will need to mow the grass during the mid-spring through summer months, as the temperatures will help the grass grow regularly in all regions. The exact range can vary slightly in Northern areas. Mowing season typically ends around early fall in the far Northeast, while it can extend to mid-fall in the Midwest. Mowing is a year-round task if you are growing it in the South or Southwest.
