Naval architects design and oversee construction of ships.

Naval architecture programs teach students to design and construct boats and ships. Many academic programs offer courses in naval architecture and the related field of marine engineering. In addition to designing ships, naval architects oversee the safety, operation and repair of vessels. Several U.S. programs offer undergraduate and graduate coursework in naval architecture and marine engineering.

  1. U.S. Naval Academy

    • The U.S. Naval Academy offers an accredited degree program in naval architecture and ocean engineering. In addition to learning basic principles of naval architecture and design, students may choose from dozens of addition courses, including ship hydrostatics, naval materials science, ocean environmental engineering, foundations for ocean structures and life support systems. A degree from the Naval Academy prepares you for a career as a naval officer or post-graduate study.

    Webb Institute

    • The Webb Institute is an engineering college in Glen Cove, New York, which offers a four-year degree in naval architecture and marine engineering. After an initial year of studying basic naval architecture, students explore ship statics, resistance and propulsion, structures, dynamics, propulsor design and marine transportation. Students undertake a different internship each year to learn marine architecture and obtain hands-on experience in the field.

    University of Michigan

    • The University of Michigan offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in naval architecture and marine engineering. Undergraduates obtain a broad background in engineering, learning about large ships as well as smaller watercraft. The graduate program offers tracks to obtain a master's or Ph.D. in naval architecture and marine engineering. Graduate-level students learn advanced principles of naval architecture in addition to completing independent research projects.

    Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • Graduate students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology can earn a master's of science in naval architecture and marine engineering. The master's degree program takes two years of full-time study. The program works closely with the U.S. Navy to help students master naval architectural and engineering principles. Receiving a master's degree requires the successful completion of an independent thesis project.

    Considerations

    • Before choosing a school, consider your long-term career goals and whether you hope to work in the military or private sector. Some programs may have internship opportunities that could lead to a post-graduate career. Contact a practicing naval architect to seek advice about your education options. While a bachelor's degree may suffice for some career paths, other jobs require a master's degree.
