Easter crafts are not only egg decorations.

Easter arts and crafts can be a festive way to bring on the holiday season, without breaking the bank. You can find many craft items in your home already, and the rest are available at little expense from a craft store. The result is quality time with your children, activities to keep your children busy and a masterpiece to showcase in your home. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Edible Dyed Eggs

    • Mix 1 tbsp. food coloring and 1 tsp. white vinegar in a small bowl. Use a separate bowls for each dye color your children would like. Hard-boil the eggs and allow them to cool completely. Instruct the children to dip the eggs into the dye, letting them soak for about 10 minutes. Adjust the soaking time as needed (pastel colors need less time, vibrant colors need more time). Remove the shell prior to eating the eggs.

    Handprint Flowers

    • Trace your child's hand onto a sheet of colored construction paper (yellow, pink and white work well). Cut out the handprint. Use a pencil or pen to curl each finger of the cutout. Roll the palm of the hand into a cone shape with the finger curls facing out, and tape or glue it together. Staple the "flower" to a green pipe cleaner. Draw leaves on green construction paper and stick them to the pipe cleaner stem.

    Ducky Masterpiece

    • Fold a paper plate in half and paint the plate yellow. With the straight, folded edge on top, this makes the duck's body. Trace your child's hands onto yellow or orange construction paper. Cut the hands out and staple them to the corner of the paper plate to create tail feathers. Draw a circle onto a yellow piece of construction paper, cut it out and glue it onto the other corner of the plate to create the head of the duck. Use orange construction paper to draw the beak and feet for the duck. Attach the beak to the circle and add googly eyes to complete the face. Attach the feet to the rounded bottom of the plate.

    Brilliant Butterfly

    • Fold a pipe cleaner in half. Cover about 1 1/2 inches at one end of a wooden craft stick in hot glue. Glue the folded pipe cleaner to the stick, with the free ends of the pipe cleaner extending beyond the end of the stick. When complete, the pipe cleaner ends will be the butterfly's antennae. Twist the two pieces of pipe cleaner together at the stick's tip, forming a small slot or loop on top of the wooden craft stick. Separate a cone coffee filter at the seam and flatten it out. Let the children decorate the outside edges of the coffee filter with crayons, markers, glitter or stickers. Thread the coffee filter through the pipe cleaner loop to create the butterfly wings. Bend the pipe cleaner ends to create antennae. The children can make the butterfly fly by moving the craft stick up and down.
