Valentine Day Card Boxes for Kids
As children mark February 14th by exchanging valentines, a Valentine's Day card box can make collecting these mementos all the more fun. With some imagination, students can transform items such as tissue boxes, food containers and cosmetic bags into personal card holders. At a class party, a larger box can take center stage as students celebrate their friendships.

Boxes from Home
-
A tissue box with a large top opening can make a personal card box. For a small classroom box, a laundry detergent box with a hinged lid can also collect valentines. You can wrap red or pink construction paper around the box. For a collage effect, small pieces of paper torn or cut into shapes can overlap on the box's surface. A large paper heart or a cutout of an animal such as a bear or dog can extend up from the back or across the top of the box.
Recycled
-
Recycling a clear plastic fruit container, such as a clam shell style that protects berries, can make a hinged valentine card box. If you prefer an opening cut at the top, you can tape the two halves of the container together. Stickers or heart-shaped cutouts can decorate the container. Instead of covering the whole box, you can leave some of the surface clear to show the card collection.

Classic Look
-
An old jewelry case can have an extended life as a child's valentine box. Removing the interior dividers will make more room for cards. Glue or heated glue from a glue gun can fasten paper or fabric to the surface. Adults or children closely supervised by adults should operate the glue gun. A satin ribbon or box can top the case. Affixing shiny beads or jewel-toned buttons can create a classic look.
Zippered Card Holder
-
A cosmetic bag with a zippered top can display a floral motif. You can use a hot glue gun to attach artificial flowers to the bag's surface. Trimming the back of the flower can make this step easier. If the flower petals fall apart, you can mix and assemble different flower pieces for a hybrid look. The zippered top can remain for the opening.
Heart Pouch with Handle
-
Supplies for a heart pouch include foam sheets, a hole punch and yarn. Starting with a paper template cut to a heart or other geometric shape, you can then cut two foam sheets. Large paper clips or binder clips can temporarily hold the two sheets together as you use a hole punch near the edges, leaving an opening for the top. Colored yard or ribbon can thread through holes to bind the two foam cut-outs. Children can use colored markers or gel pens to write valentine greetings or names on one or both foam surfaces. One or two ribbons can form handles near the top.
Classroom Card Box
-
A wastepaper basket can form an attractive valentine box for the class. Cover the outside of the basket with gift wrap. For a more personalized look, the wrapping paper can display each student's name plus the teacher's name and classroom number. A large satin ribbon or bow can adorn the top rim.
