Restaurants Offering Mother's Day Buffets
The tradition of honoring mothers traces its roots to antiquity. Ancient societies often revered goddesses as the example of motherly influences. Modern society celebrates mothers and motherhood in many different ways, but one Mother's Day tradition remains: the feast. Many establishments offer special Mother's Day menus for those desiring to give the special mother in their lives a day out of the kitchen.

History
-
The ancient Egyptians recognized Isis, considered the mother of pharaohs; the ancient Romans Cybele; and the Greeks Rhea. These celebrations in antiquity most often did not include the human mothers but the ideal of the mother-goddesses.
In modern European times, the day known as Mothering Day gained favor in the 1600s. All classes of society celebrated the day with a special feast.
The American version of the holiday marks its inception in 1870, when Julia Ward Howe. established the modern incarnation of the holiday. She intended the day to celebrate peace and motherhood. Anna Jarvis brought this seed to fruition in 1908. As a result of her tireless efforts and petitions, the United States government designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day in 1914.
No matter how you choose to honor the mother or mothers in your life, the occasion is marked, just as in ancient times, by a feast.
National Chains
-
Many chain restaurants offer Mother's Day buffet or dinner deals that are valid at any of the locations nationwide. The advantages of choosing a national chain, other than personal preference, include availability and familiarity. Choose a chain that markets itself as buffet style, like Golden Corral, or visit one that offers a buffet as part of its regular menu items, such as Shoney's. Reservations at these restaurants are not usually necessary.

Local Restaurants
-
Patronize a local restaurant for a more intimate and special feel to the Mother's Day buffet. Upscale hotel restaurants often offer special buffets for the occasion. Check the local newspaper for advertisements from local restaurants on their Mother's Day buffet special. Make reservations at a local restaurant because of the limited location and often smaller size.
State-Run Eateries
-
For an unusual twist on the Mother's Day dinner, bring Mom a restaurant in one of your state's parks. For example, Tennessee operates eight restaurants within its state park system, all of which offer a special Mother's Day dinner as of 2010. Menu items and prices vary among the restaurants, but the buffets remain available from 11 a.m. to closing at each restaurant. Group reservations are recommended. Pair the dinner with a short walk along a hiking trail or another of the park's recreational offerings.
