Research Topics for Papers
Research papers are a common occurrence, from elementary school through college. Research papers get students thinking about a specific subject in depth, and require a certain level of detail and research to earn a good grade. Choosing a topic for a research paper can be difficult, particularly if the assignment is open-ended, but with a little thought you can find a topic that both appeals to you and makes for an engaging subject.

Current Events
-
Current events make for good research paper topics, because they demonstrate an interest in and awareness of what is going on in the world. If there isn't a particular event that's currently holding your attention, look through a recent newspaper for ideas. Some ideas for current event research paper topics could include recently passed laws, changes in foreign policy, diplomatic relations, the status of any current wars, recent breakthroughs in medicine and science, and elections.
Political Topics
-
Highly charged political topics can make for controversial and incendiary research papers. If you are extremely passionate about a particular political issue, working your passion into a thoroughly researched paper is an excellent way to support your views with hard facts and data. Political research paper topics could include abortion, censorship, activism, the role of government in limiting freedoms, the separation of church and state, women's rights, gay rights, homelessness, government abuses and racial discrimination.

Science Topics
-
Many science classes assign research papers to make students look at a particular aspect of science in depth. Scientific research papers generally require a level of scientific inquiry that is more detailed than a language arts research paper. Some ideas for science-based research paper topics could include researching the biology of a specific organism, cell division, global warming, endangered species, ecosystems, clean air standards, water purification, infectious diseases, acid rain, the effects of pollution and animal rights.
Art Topics
-
Research papers are also a common assignment in art classes, particularly when students are expected to have a working knowledge of art history and specific artistic techniques. Some art related research paper topics include the history of a particular artistic technique, art as a communicative tool, the role of art in school, controversial art exhibitions, color theory, the development of pigmentation, the role of patrons in the arts, famous museums and the biographies of famous artists.
