'90s Party Costume Ideas

The 1990s had a distinctive style and feel that can be emulated through any number of costumes. If you are planning or attending a '90s-themed costume party, the easiest way to look as if you emerged straight from that era is to emulate pop-culture figures who were famous during the decade.

  1. Music Celebrities

    • There are many music celebrities who came of age in 1990s; each has a distinctive look. Dress in a plaid skirt, white shirt and pigtails to emulate a young Britney Spears. A group of women can dress up as the Spice Girls while a group of men could dress up as one of the ever-popular boy bands of the 1990s, including the Backstreet Boys or 'N Sync. Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of the band Nirvana, was one of the most infamous music legends of the 1990s; a Kurt Cobain costume consists of baggy jeans, a plaid shirt and long shaggy hair.

    Movie and TV Celebrities

    • Moive and television celebrities of the 1990s were distinctive. Costumes to consider include The Dude from the cult favorite "The Big Lebowski," a costume which requires only a bathrobe, boxers, a t-shirt and sunglasses, and Mike Meyers as Austin Powers, who can be emulated with fake bad teeth, thick-rimmed glasses, a spandex suit and a hairy chest. Popular television characters include Steve Erkel, Will Smith as the Fresh Prince of Bel Air or any of the "Friends" sitcom characters. Don't forget the popular cartoons of the era, including the "Simpsons," "Beavis and Butthead" or "Ren and Stimpy."

    Political Figures

    • Another option is to dress as a popular political figure of the 1990s. Monica Lewinsky is an easy costume as all you need is a bright blue skirt suit and poufy brown wig. Partner with a friend dressed as Bill Clinton and you have the makings of one of the biggest scandals of the era. Other famous political figures include Bob Dole, John F. Kennedy, Jr., Madeline Albright and Nelson Mandella. Wigs or character masks are the easiest way to emulate many of these political figures.

    1990s Fashion

    • Some of the more popular fashions of the '90s included shoulder pads, strirrup leggings and over-sized suit jackets. Women often wore straw hats, baggy floral-print dresses that buttoned down the front, and jewel-toned and muted blazers. Grunge men's styles included baggy jeans and oversized shirts, while sporty men's styles included baggy wind pants, cargo pants and windbreakers. A combination of any of these styles would be the perfect way to dress for a '90s-themed costume party.
