Famous Haunted High Schools

There are more than teachers and students roaming the halls of many high schools.

Strange occurrences or paranormal activities are reported at many older structures, including high schools. Most of these reports of unexplained happenings and ghostly activity are tales of harmless activities, but there are some cases where the hauntings take on a more malicious and threatening tone.

  1. Tennessee High School

    • Three ghosts reportedly haunt Tennessee High School, on Edgemont Avenue in Bristol, Tennessee. The first ghost is usually seen in the oldest part of the building, which was built in 1939. The entity, named Agnes, is a girl who supposedly lost her life on the way to a school dance after a train struck the car she was in. Both students and staff members report hearing footsteps and seeing a girl who wears white roaming around the halls. The next ghostly occurrence is that of an athlete who once went to the school and was struck by a car on his way home one night. Students report that they see the boy during games on the school athletic field. Finally, there's the case of a mysterious phantom that some students and staff believe is the train connected with the first ghost, Agnes. The train is heard coming from the gymnasium area and continuing down the hall while blasting its horn.

    North Side High School

    • North Side High School, on East State Boulevard in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is an 80-year-old school that has many reports of spirits. The school sits on a Miami, Indiana, burial ground, and the chief of a local tribe warned the district not to build the school on the site. The district ignored the warnings and it is said that the Indian chief now haunts the building. Both students and staff report that the ghost of a young female haunts the gymnasium, but nobody knows why she is there. A janitor had a heart attack in the school's basement, and there are staff members who report seeing the custodian in the area of the basement. In addition, the school auditorium is said to be haunted by a construction worker who was killed during its construction. During a renovation of the area, the construction crew reported seeing the ghostly image of the worker who lost his life.

    Hibbing High School

    • Two ghosts allegedly haunt Hibbing High School, on East 21st Street in Hibbing, Minnesota: a disabled student who died in the school's auditorium and the first stage manager who worked in the school during the 1940s. Chuck Perry, who started work as a stage manager in 1979, took several pictures of seat J47 in the school auditorium and six of the images show what appears to be a ghost sitting in the seat. In addition to the images, ghost hunters did an EVP, or electronic ghost phenomena, session that recorded several voices. Other reports include staff members hearing footsteps in the hallways, and a girl seeing someone coming into one of the backstage rooms while she was applying her makeup.

    Central High School

    • There are two mysterious ghosts haunting Central High School on Edmond Street in St. Joseph, Missouri. The hauntings cannot be explained, but it is said that one of the ghosts commonly play tricks on students and adults who are in the building. These reports come from individuals who were on the second and third floor. Common occurrences include flooded bathrooms. The second ghost is more subtle and likes to oversee the goings-on in the school's auditorium. Teachers and students both report that the ghost is friendly and welcoming. Although there are no investigations to back up the haunting, there are steady reports of the experiences.
