Art Teacher Evaluation Tools
Art teachers guide students in their artistic expression by teaching them the basics of artistic techniques. Art teachers instruct students with various projects such as sculpture, painting and ceramics. When evaluating students, art teachers use a variety of evaluation tools that take into consideration students' artistic expression while offering a critique that can inform students' later art projects.
-
Rubric
-
Design a rubric to evaluate a students' art projects. A rubric is a method of scoring based on a specific set of criteria. Score your rubric based on such criteria as technique and creative expression. Since art is subjective and you want to teach your students art techniques without discouraging them from creativity, make sure you also take into account students' growth in their art projects.
Art Portfolio
-
Have students assemble an art portfolio for their projects during the year. Students will catalog the various projects, what multimedia tools they used in the creation of the project, when they completed it, and their thoughts on the project. Peruse the portfolio at the end of the year and evaluate it based on the completion and documentation of the projects.

Goal Sheet
-
Pass out a goal sheet at the beginning of an art project so students will know what is expected of them. List different categories, such as form, texture, design, color and lines. Let students know they will be graded on the use of these artistic techniques in their projects. Include on the goal sheet a field for creative expression so students will understand they are encouraged to express themselves through their art projects. When students have met all goals, check them off on the sheet and share the good results with the student.
Theme Project
-
Students assemble a themed art project. They work on component art projects in different media, but with a single unifying theme. Evaluate them on how they use of the theme throughout the different art projects they create. Observe for creativity and the use of the theme in different artistic genres, such as painting, sculpture and pottery.
