Face painting can unlock the imagination of both the painter and the subject. The top priority when purchasing face paints is to confirm that they are water based and specifically designed for use on facial skin. Keep in mind that "non-toxic" does not necessarily mean that a paint is safe to use on faces. Some of the top brands are Snazaroo, Fardel and Ben Nye. A clean, thin paintbrush should be used to apply details, while a sponge is needed to cover large areas. Aprons or smocks are useful to help prevent messes. The painter should plan in advance what designs will be available to choose from. It is also useful to have a mirror handy so the children can see themselves with the paint.

Face painting can become a serious passion, and even a career. Makeup effects artists in film and television frequently use face painting techniques to create characters, such as the Joker in the Batman films. Outside of entertainment, there is a demand for face painters for hire at children's parties, Halloween parties and fundraisers. Booths for such events should be set up with predetermined designs and prices. It is also important for painters at these events to plan hourly breaks and bring comfortable stools to prevent back strain.
