Winter weddings, especially in cold climates, can pose challenges on the big day due to snow and chilly temperatures. These concerns lead to indoor ceremonies and receptions, which can make for formal affairs. With careful planning and some creativity, a winter wedding can be beautiful, elegant and cozy, despite the weather.

  1. Colors

    • While any colors can be used for winter weddings, what sets a winter wedding apart from others is its potential for elegance. Frigid temperatures lead couples to hold winter weddings indoors, such as in ballrooms, and simple color schemes can create a formal look. Options include white and silver, white and deep red, or silver, white and shades of midnight or icy blue.

    Tables

    • White candles, used as centerpieces or scattered on the tables, will add warmth and soft lighting to a winter wedding. Use a combination of tall and short centerpieces, so some tables could have several taper candles in crystal holders while others could have a collection of small votives in simple glass holders. Depending on the time of year, glass hurricanes filled with Christmas tree bulbs that match the wedding colors are also centerpiece options that can be used in addition to the candles.

    Flowers

    • Some couples opt for artificial flowers for winter weddings because it can be difficult to find hearty enough flowers to stand up to the cold weather. If selecting fresh flowers, consider white blooms, such as roses, peonies and ranunculus. Accent bouquets and boutonnieres with silver brunia and pine cones. Adding crystals or winter white branches to floral arrangements offers another possibility. White velvet ribbon tied around bouquets and boutonnieres to completes the winter look.

    Trees and Wreaths

    • To create a winter wonderland ambiance for your wedding, consider decorating the ceremony site and/or the reception area with winter trees, such as fake white Christmas trees, small birch trees or any tree painted white. String white Christmas lights on the branches, and add crystal ornaments to help reflect the light and add sparkle. White wreaths also can be used as decorative accents on the pews of the church for the ceremony or in the reception space.
