A movie-themed party is popular for children and adults alike.

A movie-themed party brings out the film lovers in all of us. Movie-themed parties are popular for children, who may celebrate their birthdays with a specific movie character, but adults enjoy a movie party with their friends too. Decorate your own imaginative movie party cake, while keeping in mind the age range and the movie choice of your party. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Children's Movie Party Cake

    • Parents often choose a movie character party theme for their children's birthday parties. Frost sheet cakes completely white first to decorate it like a flat two-dimensional picture. Then, pipe on a picture on the flat top or add small plastic figurines from the film. Some popular children's movies have their own cake pans, such as "Thomas the Tank Engine," so that the cake itself is in the shape of a movie character. Another idea is cutting out cake into the shape of a movie character or an element from the movie, like the sorting hat in "Harry Potter." Cut the cake freehand with a sharp knife and use colored fondant to decorate it.

    Award Shows

    • A movie party cake is appropriate for a gathering to watch the Academy Awards or Golden Globes. Create a general movie theme cake with a film roll and clapboard made out of painted, rolled out gum paste on a plain white frosted cake. Purchase a small Oscar statue to place on a plain sheet cake and use a black frosting pen to write, "and the award goes to." Another idea is to use a red frosted sheet cake as a red carpet and add dolls walking on top.

    Horror Movie Party

    • A horror movie party is fun idea around Halloween. Cut out a black frosted bat from a sheet cat or bake it from a bat-shaped pan. Recreate a scene from your favorite horror movie, such as "Friday the 13th," with a plain white frosted sheet cake. Decorate the lake scene with blue gel frosting and purchase small trees from a modeling store. Place a small ax with red gel frosting for blood in a corner.

    Science Fiction

    • A Sci-Fi movie party cake brings out the child is all of us. Recreate a cake from a favorite childhood science fiction movie such as "2001" or "Back to the Future." A sheet cake topped with small figurines from the film is a simple way to decorate, or shape two round cakes placed on top of each other into a character from a science fiction movie, such as Jabba the Hutt from "Star Wars." Cut the basic shape out with a sharp knife from the stacked cakes, and lay a fondant over the entire cake, gently shaping it into place. Brush or spray on edible paint to finish your cake.
