Church Drama Scripts for Kids

Many churches offer drama programs in order to gather the entire congregation and participate in an activity. If your church doesn't have a drama department, you can assemble students from a Sunday school class to perform a short play or skit for their parents, a fundraiser or as part of a worship service.

  1. Christmas Stories

    • Most everyone who regularly attends church is familiar with the story of the first Christmas. However, children may become even more familiar with it by acting it out. Instead of using the classic story, think of ways to make it different. Adapt the story from the point of view of an animal in the stable or from the point of view of the Magi -- or pen a modern adaption. This can be done with your Sunday school class in order to encourage creative and critical thinking.

    Moral Lessons

    • Talk to your class about different things they may struggle with on a day-to-day basis. Discuss some of the temptations they run into that pull them away from God. Brainstorm various moral struggles and solutions to the issue with your class. When you've finished, create characters with your class that encompass a few main struggles for the Sunday school students to act out. Practice writing dialogue that fit these characters and their circumstances -- and develop the surrounding environment that inspires imagination.

    Ethnic Dramas

    • Some churches are formed based on ethnicity -- for example, Korean-speaking churches or Polish-speaking churches. In these communities, most people who attend share the same cultural background. Celebrate this by having your class adapt a cultural fairy tale into a play. If you'd like, include elements of God into the fairy tale if not already represented. You can incorporate an alternate ending for what the character should have done if her faith in God had been stronger.

    Biblical Musicals

    • While the more famous Broadway Biblical musicals such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Children of Eden and Jesus Christ Superstar were made for an adult cast, it doesn't mean your kids can't sing some of the songs for the congregation. Adapt your own Joseph story or the Creation story and use some of the more famous or simpler songs as highlights. Try setting the story in a different time period, but challenge yourself and the kids by including two or three songs from the stage musical.
