Fish on a pond or river.

Fish games can be fun and educational, and can be played by one person or a large group. Activities involving real fish are wonderful for outdoor amusement, while many indoor games can include fish, too. Choose a game that fits with the age and personality of the child.

  1. Pond Fishing Competition

    • A friendly fishing competition is a wonderful way to enjoy a day outdoors and give your kids exercise. Provide fishing poles and bait to all participants. Allow kids to cast lines and compete to see who can hook and reel in the most fish. Taking children to a pond, stream or park can enhance an appreciation for natural splendor and a respect for the environment. A pond fishing competition is a fun way to enjoy a warm weekend or a child's birthday.

    Fish Fact Flashcards

    • You can make games enjoyable and instructive by composing fish fact flashcards. Write a fact about a fish onto one side or the card and a clue or keyword about the fact on the opposite side. For example, on one side of the card write a questions, such as "What is New Hampshire's state fish?" On the flip side write "Eastern brook trout." Play the game with a child to see how many they answer correctly. Fish fact flashcards are helpful as study aids for school tests or fun ways to instill aquatic knowledge.

    Fish Guessing Games

    • A guessing game involving fish can also increase a child's understanding of sea creatures -- while still promoting fun. Draw a picture of a fish or other sea life and ask a child to identify the parts of the fish and how those parts function. The child may speak the names or the parts or write them down. For example, identifying the fins and gills and explaining that they are for swimming and breathing, respectively, are ways to connect a child's visual identification to the fish with its organic function.

    Online Games

    • Online games are an entertaining way for child to learn about fish. Free digital games on the Learn4Good website, for example, offer kids a wide range of easy and exciting options. The Fishy Game is one example. This game has you move through the sea as a fish. The objective is to eat smaller fish so you can grow and avoid being eaten by a bigger fish yourself. Online games teach kids about underwater life and allow them to play independently.
