Prospective students wishing to specialize in music production and engineering can choose from a range of study options in Indiana. Qualifications available in the state include certificates, associate degrees, bachelor's degrees and master's degrees. Most programs require applicants to have some musical ability.

  1. Purdue University

    • The Department of Music and Arts Technology at Purdue University offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Music Technology. The first two years of this four-year program focus on the theory of music, music history, aural training and keyboard skills. The program teaches digital music technology in dedicated music labs and facilities. Admission requirements include a high school diploma and tests of musicianship such as sight-reading and aural abilities. Students take 130 hours of coursework with a concentration in a field such as computer technology. The college also offers a Masters of Science in Music Technology.

    Indiana University

    • Indiana University in Bloomington offers a bachelor's degree in Audio Recording. Prospective students can also choose an associate's degree. The bachelor's program is four years and involves spending more than 1,000 hours in the studio. In the first two years of the program, students take four semesters of coursework, and in the final year, complete an internship. Throughout the program, the students provide production and recording support for other students in the department. The degree programs are heavily focused on practical, hands-on skills, especially as the student progresses.

    Indiana University Southeast

    • Students looking for a Bachelor of Arts in Music can apply to Indiana University Southeast in New Albany. The Sound Engineering major is part of the Music Industry concentration and incorporates traditional music courses. In the first two years of the program, students take part in ensembles and practice aural and music skills. Prospective students must undergo an interview, demonstrate competency of voice or on a musical instrument and show understanding of basic notation. The program also includes practical education in production labs and music engineering software.

    Vincennes University

    • Vincennes University offers a certificate in Audio Recording. The certificate is valid for one year and prepares students for assistant engineer positions in digital or analog production facilities. The course covers the fundamentals of equipment set-up and operation, recording techniques, acoustics and computer applications.
