What Are the Benefits of Donating a Car to PBA?

Public Broadcasting Atlanta, or PBA, is home to WABE, 90.1 FM, the Atlanta PBS station 30, and is a partner station of NPR, or National Public Radio. Like most organizations in need of public funding, PBA accepts car donations through Charitable Auto Resources, Inc.

  1. Program and Outreach Funding

    • By donating your used car, boat, motorcycle or truck to PBA, you are funding new and existing educational or entertainment programming, or community-outreach local events. The actual donation transaction is handled by CARS, a third-party car donation service, which sells your vehicle at a private auction and gives a portion of the proceeds to PBA.

    Financial Benefits

    • According to the PBA website, a PBA vehicle donation may be a cheaper and less time-consuming alternative to selling your car on the private market, which can involve advertising, insurance expenses while the car is on the market, and state inspection sticker and registration expenses. When donating a car to PBA, the only requirements are one engine, four wheels, and the car's title. If you do not have your car's title, you can get a duplicate title with the Georgia Division of Motor Vehicles. For a PDF version of the Georgia title replacement application, or Form MV-1 (see Resources).

    Tax Deduction

    • A vehicle donation to PBA may qualify for a tax deduction on your federal taxes. Within 30 days of donating your vehicle, PBA will send you a tax receipt with a federal ID number and the amount of money your vehicle sold for at CARS' private auction. If your car brought in more than $500, you can claim the sale price on that year's tax return.

    Convenience

    • Donating your car to PBA is a convenient way to help fund a charity, as PBA picks up the tab for the towing, no vehicle appraisal is necessary. You can arrange for a CARS pickup within 24 hours, and you do not even need to be with the vehicle at towing time. For a link to the CARS website, see Resources.
