A font is the style of character used to represent a letter, number or symbol in a typed format -- these days, "font" is most often referred to in relation to words typed on a computer. Thousands of fonts are available, ranging from professional to wacky to fancy. Fancy fonts would include those representing that script-type form and look similar to cursive or calligraphy. The script styles are often used when the author of a piece wants to add a personalized touch to the writing. Fancy fonts include Edwardian, Aristocrat, American Scribe, French, Lucinda Calligraphy, Coronet and a long list of others.

Calligraphy is a fancy lettering style used as an art form or for formal correspondence such as wedding announcements and event invitations. Religious art, graphic design, memorial documents, birth and death certificates and government decrees often feature some form of calligraphy. A special calligraphy fountain pen with a metal nib is used to create numbers and letters of the alphabet. Markers with special tips can also create a similar effect.

A stencil is a thin piece of plastic, metal or cardboard that contains a cut-out of a specific design, such as letters of the alphabet. An individual places the stencil on a surface and fills the open area of the material with some form of pigment like paint, chalk or pen. Because of the nature of the product, stencils can produce the same uniform design over and over. Stencils with fancy lettering can be obtained and used to create personalized letterhead, signs, wall art or invitations.
Cursive

Cursive is a style of handwriting produced through the continual motion of the pen, with each letter flowing into the next. This type of writing allows an individual to move quickly through words, and when necessary, create a more formal appearance to correspondence. Cursive is often used to represent fancy lettering in fonts and stencils.
