Mother's Day is special for the entire family.

Mother's Day is a celebration to honor mothers and motherhood. Traditionally, the mother's children or spouse will bestow something upon her to express their love and gratitude. Cooking your mother a meal is a common Mother's Day celebration, giving her the day off from preparing food. There are several different meal ideas to choose from, select one you feel best suits your mother's personality.

  1. Breakfast in Bed

    • Surprise your mother with her favorite breakfast, in bed. Prepare a full meal, such as waffles, eggs and toast with a glass of orange juice. Place all toppings and condiments such as butter and syrup in small containers that will not get in the way. Present the meal to your mother on a tray that sits over her while she is lying down. Proper presentation prevents any messes and ensures that she is comfortable while dining. Remember to make extra in case she is still hungry and asks for seconds. Serve the meal alongside a Mother's Day card as a finishing touch.

    Picnic

    • Prepare a picnic meal for your Mother and invite her on a walk or hike with you. Make sure everything you prepare is packaged in spill-proof containers, and can be served cold. Salads, sandwiches, fruit, bread and wine will all carry well in a picnic basket or bag. Bring a blanket to lie down on the ground and eat on. Consider bringing folding stools to sit on if your Mother would have a difficult time sitting directly on the ground. If others will be joining you for the Mother's Day picnic, consider having them set everything up so it is waiting when the two of you arrive.

    Dinner and Dessert

    • Cook your mother a large dinner with a sweet dessert to surprise her on Mother's Day. Consider making her favorite cake and use icing to inscribe it with a meaningful phrase to personalize the evening. Begin the dinner with a light appetizer such as breadsticks, soup or a fruit salad for her to dine on while she reads her card or opens her presents. After dinner, present her with dessert to complete the Mother's Day meal.

    Cooking Together

    • If you have several children in your family, prepare all of the ingredients to cook a large breakfast with your mother. When she wakes for breakfast, surprise her and tell her the family would like to help her cook. Have the recipes on hand and all of the ingredients premeasured so preparation is easy and stress-free. After cooking and eating breakfast, have the family wash dishes and clean up the kitchen afterward. Easy meals such as pancakes, omelets and fried potatoes work best for quick preparation time and cleanup.
